Analysis of Database Management and Information Retrieval...

Differentiate between database management system and information retrieval system by focusing on their functionalities. Answer: What is database management system? Database Management System is a database program. The DBMS manage incoming data, organize it, and provided ways for the data to be modified or extract by users or other programs. This cause, most database software comes with an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver that allows the database to integrate with other databases. For example, common SQL statements such as SELECT and INSERT are translated from a programs proprietary syntax into a syntax other databases can understand. Some DBMS examples include PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Microsoft Access, Oracle, FileMaker, RDBMS, dBASE, Clipper, and FoxPro. It is a software system that uses a standard method of retrieving, and running queries on data. What is information retrieval system? Informational Retrieval System is the activity of obtaining information resources relevant to an information need from a collection of information resources. Web search engines are the most visible. Search can be based on metadata or on full-text (or other content-based) indexing. Automated information retrieval systems are used to reduce what has been called information overload. Many universities and public libraries use IR systems to provide access to books, journals and other documents.
